From
November 14th - December 20th, artist Kathy Casey's
newest works will hang in the main gallery for art lovers to
view and purchase. With over 50 works, Kathy presents a wide
assortment of what she is best known for--her stylistic forms
and unique color combinations. |

|
Though mainly a self-taught
artist, Kathy has studied many artistic movements and feels that
her work is best suited to Abstract Expressionism.
""The
works that I’ve studied by the masters that really speak to me
tend to be completely non-objective rather than tell a story.
It forces the viewer to be a participant and decide what
something means"
|
Casey’s
work is the result of self-exploration. Therefore, she never
knows quite where the artistic progression will take her. She
describes her painting process as beginning with a “loosely
conceived plan” which she eventually abandons as the work
takes on new meanings. As she works, Casey states, “Mark,
line, and gesture are worked into a textured surface, and
partially concealed with heavy paint, layers of glazes, and
scumbled colors. Paint is pushed in and scoured away. I
search for beauty in the seemingly imperfect, unearthing and
embracing subtle details that beckon the viewer to linger and
look more closely.”
Over
time, Casey’s process of push and pull with her materials
develops into work that has a great deal of physical and emotive
substance. Avoiding subject matter and narrative,
Casey instead focuses on subtle details that make it possible
for the viewers to become participants, deciding how the work
affects them on a personal level. Casey draws inspiration
from her own life experiences, and hopes that her viewers will
interpret the work by doing the same.

. "In
the current show, I have very strong organic grids - hanging
next to soft-soothing landscape type compositions.
My painting style is a mirror of my life – some days
are peaceful…some days are all out wild."
The
exhibition runs from November 14th - December 20th

palettes and accessories, lots of artist canvas and
art papers, a fine drawing and pastel department...a
custom picture framing department and we also offer art
classes. City Art is the starting place for
creative people in Columbia, SC and surrounding
areas. The art supply store is located in the
basement floor. On the main floor resides the
main exhibition gallery and another side space that
houses the framing design department and smaller 2 and
3 dimensional works of art like pottery, glass,
sculpture, jewelry and the like. The art supply
store is always running sales and specials and offers
a frequent buyer discount card for anyone.. Often overlooked is the gallery space on
the 3rd floor. It's well worth climbing the stairs and
that's where the art classes are held as well.
The main gallery is also available for rental for
parties, dinners and wedding receptions. Come
explore all that City Art has to offer.

"City
Art is not only Columbia’s largest gallery, but
it’s also one of only a small handful of private
local galleries that consistently seeks out and
presents the most talented and thought-provoking local
and regional artists.
The gallery’s annual “Emerging Artists of
the Southeast” series is especially noteworthy for
its scope, ambition and overall contribution to the
local visual arts scene."
