Fine
art was not what Ray Davenport had in mind when finishing high
school in New York City... in fact, he had hoped to pursue
a career in architecture. WW-II had different plans for him.
After the war Davenport was honorably discharged and found a
job doing line drawing for a daily newspaper. He entered
Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY which became his training
ground for the commercial art field.
Davenport
has worked as
a commercial artist, illustrator and printing plant manager. During
these last 24 years as a painter, he has measured his work
against the best by entering prestigious exhibitions, both
regional and national. As a result, his work has been
recognized with well over 130 awards, listed in Who's Who in
American Art, elected full membership into The National
Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic and Allied Artists
of America and is a Charter member and Member with Excellence,
South Carolina Watercolor Society.
Artist's
Statement
“Since
my work is representational and nonobjective viewers see it in
many ways. My representational work is seen visually and then
emotionally if the viewer has encountered a situation similar
to that presented in the piece. They become tied emotionally
because it triggers their memories. My non-objective work is
seen more emotionally because it affects the viewers, yet they
can’t explain why.”
