Doug
McAbee lives and works in Spartanburg, SC. A two-time graduate
of Winthrop University, he received his MFA in 2003. Doug is a
Graphic Designer by day, an Adjunct Faculty Member at Winthrop
University by night, and Sculptor in the moments in between.
Doug’s sculptures have been selected for national juried
exhibitions in Chicago, IL, as well as in North Carolina,
South Carolina and Georgia. He has received honorable mention
at regional contemporary art shows and his large-scale outdoor
installations are public favorites while his smaller indoor
sculptures are garnering collectors’ interest. Doug was
recently honored to be featured in the Triennial 2004 Exhibit
at the South Carolina State Museum with an indoor and outdoor
exhibition.
His sculptures are described as whimsical, fun, and
animated and his colors are bold and expressive. He uses
imagery that seems familiar and accessible yet somehow hovers
in the area just beyond recognition. These sculptures are
inviting and comfortable at first glance. As they are
considered, however, viewers will likely find that first
impressions may have been misleading.
