Bruce Nellsmith

The Exhibit features recent paintings and drawings by Bruce Nellsmith, an award-winning artist and Chairman of the Department of Art at Newberry College. Completed over the past eighteen months, the works continue the artist's ongoing project in abstract cityscapes.  

 

Using memory, drawings made on site,  and the overall experience of a given landscape, ranging from Atlanta to Rome, Nellsmith presents the scenes with lively brushstrokes and vibrant colors. 

 

Scrutinizing and obsessively concentrating on the abstract shapes and patterns of nature rather than literally depicting an environment, Nellsmith isolates the fascinating concepts of texture and color harmony from the endless palette of possibilities offered by the surrounding environment that influences all of us, even in the mundane everyday streets and parks of our Southern cities.

 

 

Being well-schooled in the history and theory of art, Nellsmith combines traditional formalism and objective visual concepts with the joyful immediacy of contemporary painting. He approaches each work on its own terms, as a lyrical visual story that does not require words.

City Art.  More than an art gallery.  We have a full line professional artist supply store...artist watercolor, oil and acrylic paint, artist brushes and palettes and accessories, lots of artist canvas and art papers, a fine drawing and pastel department...a custom picture framing department and we also offer art classes.  City Art is the starting place for creative people in Columbia, SC and surrounding areas.  The art supply store is located in the basement floor.  On the main floor resides the main exhibition gallery and another side space that houses the framing design department and smaller 2 and 3 dimensional works of art like pottery, glass, sculpture, jewelry and the like.  The art supply store is always running sales and specials and offers a frequent buyer discount card for anyone..  Often overlooked is the gallery space on the 3rd floor.  It's well worth climbing the stairs and that's where the art classes are held as well.  The main gallery is also available for rental for parties, dinners and wedding receptions.  Come explore all that City Art has to offer.
