Artist Statement
any
cohesiveness found in my work is usually due to my passion for
mark-making and a consistent interest in the relatedness of
systems and people.
I’m interested in focusing less on my particular experience,
and more on how my experience is oddly but understandably
similar to others.
Using
basic information and generalized nostalgia, I try to call
attention to the continuances in our lives, from one
person to the next, one generation to the next, or simply, one
anything to the next. Technology, wealth, location, and
other individual experiences seem to differentiate us from
each other, our ancestors, and our environment, but stripping
away the details usually reveals our similarities.
her/my
family
when sally and i married, our individual families practically
doubled. folks who will never meet, suddenly became
vicarious loved ones. i suddenly have a grandfather, two
great-grandfathers and two great-grandmothers who i will never
meet or know. likewise, sally will never meet or know any of
my great-grandparents or my mother’s father. oddly
though, and with no hesitation, we share our families and care
for each other’s ancestors as if there never was a time when
we were not family.
her/my family is the product of my drawing sally’s family
photos in an effort to participate in her past…spending time
with folks, most of which i’ll never meet.
i hope that these images look familiar to you, and start to
blur the lines between relatives and strangers. my
cousin may soon marry a cousin of yours, and instantly, we are
family.
geometry/biology
with this series, i sought to visually explore the
relationships between geometric patterns and living
things. i found a wealth of subject matter in the basic
shapes of houses and neighborhoods. the series
will eventually include images of the orderly nature of our
gardens and the patterns of our anatomy, but for now, houses
offer the most blatant and common example of my intention.
plus, with every new drawing, the neighborhood grows.
