K. Wayne Thornley

 Scratching the Surface

Thursday, November 18, 2004- Thursday, November 23, 2004

COLUMBIA, S.C.---- City Art Celebrates the holiday season with the solo show of K. Wayne Thornley entitled, “Scratching the Surface”. The show opens to the public in conjunction with Vista Lights on November 18, 2004. The show continues through Thursday December 23, 2004.  City Art will host a reception with the artist December 2, 2004, 5 to 8 p.m. The reception is open to the public.

Thornley will make his City Art debut with his latest work that continues his study of primal themes. His paintings reflect his fascination with territory, texture, and “mark making.” Thornley incises lines, shapes, and symbols into layers of acrylic medium and paint to create surfaces that suggest primitive landscapes or unearthed artifacts.

“I enjoy constructing paintings that hint at primitive themes. They are about past and present, what lies above the surface and what lies beneath. Most importantly, they are the physical remains of a primal urge we all have to leave some evidence of existence,” explains Thornley.

K. Wayne Thornley has been a significant member of the Columbia arts scene for many years. He has been an active supporter and participant in local and state art organizations for over 20 years. Thornley has consistently garnered top honors in juried competitions across the Southeast. Thornley is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he studied art, art history, advertising and marketing communications. His work has been featured in exhibitions at York County Museum, Rock Hill, SC; Queens College, Charlotte, NC; The Upstairs Gallery, Tryon, NC; The Gibbes Museum, Charleston, SC; Carol Saunders Gallery, Columbia, SC; Columbia College, Columbia, SC; and the Lipscomb Gallery at the South Carolina State Museum, Columbia, SC.

City Art Gallery is located at 1224 Lincoln St. in the historic Congaree Vista area in Columbia, South Carolina. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m, and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information contact Marissa Dancer, Executive Assistant, City Art Gallery, at 803-252-3613.
