ALEX POWERS WORKSHOP

The Workshop: “Design and Personal Style with 2 Days of Models”  5 Days $550.00

When: February 15 - 19, 2010

City Art is delighted to be able to offer a workshop with the renowned artist and teacher Alex Powers. We encourage anyone at any level in their artistic development to study with Alex Powers. The workshop participants may work in a variety of media with the exception of oils (due to odor and allergic reactions). All registrants will receive further information about the workshop along with hotel, restaurant and all other pertinent materials.

"The workshop is more about (1) participants’ personal painting style and (2) design, than it is about (3) technique and (4) subject matter (image) / models. The workshop will include: Slide lectures, Individual critiques of work from home, Individual critiques at your table / easel, Group critiques, 2 models, One demonstration painting, Handout printed material, A photo album of my painting.

Workshop Schedule:

* There will be a schedule posted in the classroom all week.

* 1-hour slide lectures the first 3 mornings.

* Demo’ the 4th morning

* After these activities, participants will paint, while Alex does the Individual Consultations and helps at the tables.

* You will paint at the beginning of the class day the last morning.

* If the studio space is available, an after-class group critique of the day’s painting will be held the first 3 afternoons.

* The last afternoon of class time will be a group critique of 3 or more of the paintings that you did during the week.

 Individual Consultation of work from home:

- It is important that you bring 8 images of paintings from home or bring the originals. Color photo prints will suffice if necessary. The 8 should be a fair representation of what you have done recently. Older paintings do not apply to this critique. Your paintings, of course, do not have to be people paintings. Do not be influenced by what you may know about me, in choosing your 8 paintings.

- The Consultations are 15 minutes in length. There will be a sign-up sheet in the classroom. If you do not want others to sit in on your consultation, write “Private” after your name. In thinking about how to use your 15 minutes to the best advantage, it would be best to let me do most of the talking. If you have a few specific questions, have reminder-notes for yourself. Please do not tell me that your Aunt Sally liked a certain painting, or that it sold, or that it won an award, or what medium was used. Let me identify what I think is your intent (expression, content, meaning) and let’s discuss whether that is what you want to express or not. Then we’ll discuss how form (design), art materials, technique, choice of subject matter, etc. will better deliver your expressive intent. Come to the workshop with the intention of identifying more clearly what you work is about, and how to express it in a more personal way. All workshop signees will be provided with any details necessary upon registration.
