Artist Statement

I make abstract acrylic paintings on canvas, collages and mixed-media pieces, which, through a rigorous process of working and reworking composition and art elements, arrive at a harmonious expression of the essential nature of the subject. Life experience may be similarly layered.

My work is inspired by my experience of places, distant, close to home, and from my imagination. Using non-representational imagery, the work describes the ‘spirit’ of each place. I work thematically as each experience may suggest many possible visual outcomes. Subject matter may serve as metaphor for intangible ideas. The work examines boundaries, addresses the fragility of existence, of presence, of absence, and of memory.

In 2013, it will be 30 years since I relocated to the US. Much has happened during that time and my work has grown and changed in a number of ways. To mark the passing of the years and in the spirit of celebration and reflection, I have planned a series of exhibitions. The work in this show, the first of several in the US and Europe, is a selection of work completed over the past 30 years.

Moody was educated in Scotland. In 1972, she earned an Honors Degree from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, Scotland. She gained her Certificate of Secondary School Teaching in Art from Moray House College of Education in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1973. From 1973 to 1982 Moody worked and lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, as a professional artist. In 1983, she moved to the United States and started her career. She is currently employed as an associate professor of art at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC.

Moody has been featured in numerous solo and mixed exhibits throughout the US – including New York City and Washington DC, as well as in South and North Carolina. Galleries included are McColl Center for Visual Art, Dalton Gallery and Pease Gallery to name a few. Her work is included in many permanent public and private collections, including the ‘South Carolina State Art Collection’, MUSC’s ‘Carolina Contemporary Collection’ at Ashley Tower and was recently on display in the SC State Museum’s ‘Abstract Art in South Carolina: 1949 – 2012’ exhibition. Throughout 2013 Moody’s work will be featured in four solo exhibitions - in Columbia, Charlotte, Chicago and Dundee, Scotland. Others are planned in Portugal and England in 2014. Over the years, she has received several awards for her work. From Winthrop University, she has been the recipient of research grants and endowment awards. Her dedication to art has earned three Regional Artists Project Grants from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts & Science Council, NC.
