Tim Floyd

Oil Paintings

September 4-27, 2008

Beginning in September 2008, City Art will showcase the work of Columbia artist Tim Floyd in a solo exhibit titled “Oil Paintings”. City Art will host an opening reception for the artist September 4, 2008 from 6-8pm, and the show will remain in the gallery until September 27, 2008. The public is welcome.

Though Tim incorporates traditional ideas of landscape imagery into his work, the bulk of his focus is on progressing these traditional techniques into modern times. “Years ago, painters recorded what they saw. There was a need to document as well as provide a beautiful painting. Today, we have photography to do that. I don’t see a need to paint something that could be a photograph. I prefer to create something that has not been seen.” And, while Tim’s work alters and abstracts the landscape, it is still recognizable as such, providing the viewer with a smooth transition into abstraction and giving the work more approachability.

Tim’s inspiration ranges from everyday life to well known artists to publications.  In an effort to record his inspiration, Tim keeps a book filled with photographs, that he has both taken and come across, in his studio.  “I can pick up my “idea” file and be ready to paint in a matter of minutes. People inspire me. A Sunday morning sermon might inspire me.” Tim’s reaction to inspiration is often what he uses as his motivation for a painting. Whether negative or positive, Tim uses that energy and emotion to its fullest level in his line form, brushstrokes, color choices, and composition. He wants the viewer to feel something when looking at the work as well, and hopefully find a connection to it.

City Art.  More than an art gallery.  We have a full line professional artist supply store...artist watercolor, oil and acrylic paint, artist brushes and palettes and accessories, lots of artist canvas and art papers, a fine drawing and pastel department...a custom picture framing department and we also offer art classes.  City Art is the starting place for creative people in Columbia, SC and surrounding areas.  The art supply store is located in the basement floor.  On the main floor resides the main exhibition gallery and another side space that houses the framing design department and smaller 2 and 3 dimensional works of art like pottery, glass, sculpture, jewelry and the like.  The art supply store is always running sales and specials and offers a frequent buyer discount card for anyone.  Often overlooked is the gallery space on the 3rd floor.  It's well worth climbing the stairs and that's where the art classes are held as well.  The main gallery is also available for rental for parties, dinners and wedding receptions.  Come explore all that City Art has to offer.

"City Art is not only Columbia’s largest gallery, but it’s also one of only a small handful of private local galleries that consistently seeks out and presents the most talented and thought-provoking local and regional artists.  The gallery’s annual “Emerging Artists of the Southeast” series is especially noteworthy for its scope, ambition and overall contribution to the local visual arts scene.
